When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint.

When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.

Objective #5: Human Rights/Economic and Social Justice

Practice with an understanding of human rights and social justice by engaging in systematic social change to alleviate economic deprivation and oppression by applying change strategies to begin the process of achieving a just society in a global community.

Sex Offenders (BSW)

Human Rights Violation (BSW)

Rationale:

While this paper (labeled "Sex Offenders") was completed in my Sophmore year on my journey to earn my BSW, I do feel that it illustrates my ability to analyze and advocate for social change. I realized then that my views may not be popular, especially when it comes to the subject of this specific paper, legislature for sex offenders, however I also realized that I have a commitment to fight for equal rights. Further, I feel that this paper suggests my ability to see beyond "the hype," face and present the real issues at hand so that society, as a collective unit, can focus on creating practical and just solutions for issues that impact the whole and specific at-risk groups.

Additionally, I have included an integral part of my participation in the 1st Annual Truth Commission which was hosted by UTC Senior Social Work Students in the Fall of 2007. The Truth Commission in and of itself was a time for the community to join together and to discuss economic human rights violations suffered by individuals throughout Chattanooga. Attached is a brief synopsis of an interview I completed (which documents an economic human rights violation) and was subsequently read at the event.
