Objective #6: Social Work History & Policy

 

Integrate an appreciation for the history of the social work profession and the relationship between social welfare policies and the social work profession to inform the context of current generalist practice.

Rationale:

 

One of my personal interests is social policy and affecting social policy on a national level. I believe being able to effectively assess and evaluate policy is key to being a well-rounded Social Worker. Further, one must be familar with social policies and how they impact society in order to influence positive change. Through my undergraduate course work, I have learned skills to evaluate social policy research as evidenced through the above assignment. Further, I feel confident in applying the knowledge gained from the evaluation of social policies to develop appropriate interventions for my client base who may be unfairly impacted by such policies. I feel that evaluating social policy is an integral part of being a competent social worker because one can not effectively assist another without understanding the political underpinnings which sometimes forces people into situations that keep them poor, uneducated, or ill.
